This has dangerously crept into students’ writing

The language of text messages has crept into students’ writing. This is dangerous because it costs students valuable marks in examinations.

The following are excerpts of students’ scripts with text messages.

Excerpt 1:

I ran as fast as I could but I missed the bus. It sped off before I could reach the bus stop. I knew I was going to be late for the birthday dinner, so I quickly texted my mother.

“Mum I missed the bus and will b late for dinner. Pls apologize to everyone for me.”

*b= be Pls= please

Excerpt 2:

I was so angry with my best friend that I had to text her right at that moment.

“Jane, I am angry with you bcoz you broke your promise and went out

with Fiona instead of me.”

*bcoz = because

Excerpt 3:

I messaged him and said, “Btw Sam, Idk why u keep thinking abt the incident. It is over as far as i am concerned.”

*Btw= by the way Idk=I don’t know abt=about i=I

Please remind your children not to use the language of text messages in their writing. Precious marks go wastefully down the drain.
